Aesthetic Doctor Shares 5 Crucial Skincare Routine For Healthier Skin

The truth is, many of the patients who walk into skin clinics could have easily prevented their skin condition if they maintained a proper skincare routine from the start.

Unfortunately, many of them simply don’t know how to go about it. Often, the combination of poor cleansing routine and unsuitable skincare products leads to a cycle of frustrating breakouts.

It doesn’t help that many patients are also confused by contradicting advice from cosmetic companies wanting to make a quick sell.

To cure the confusion once and for all, we ask Dr Junie Ong from Ko Skin Specialist to pen down five basic skincare routine everyone should be practicing for healthier skin:

1. Double cleanse

The proper way to clean your skin after a long day out is to double cleanse. Firstly, clean your face with an oil-based cleanser to remove make up, sunscreen, and pollutants. Then, use a foaming cleanser to further purify the skin. Picking good quality cleanser is crucial, learn more about the top 10 skin care products in Malaysia.

Double cleansing is important as it prepares your skin to reap maximum benefit from your toner, moisturiser and other products that follow. This method also helps to promote a healthier, balanced, and properly moisturised skin.

If cleansing two times sounds like too much effort, you can use the KO Dermacare 2-in-1 Purifying Cleansing Gel. This cleanser combines both a cleansing oil and foaming cleanser. As you massage the cleansing oil into your skin, it will turn into a foam, providing a deep, through cleanse.

2. Use a toner with salicylic acid

Salicylic acid is an effective exfoliant that is also anti-irritant and anti-microbial. When used appropriately, it can help treat breakouts. Apply the toner first before applying other products to prevent your skin from getting clogged by make up residue. With prolonged use of a good toner, you will also notice smaller pores and less breakouts. Those with acne-prone and oily skin are recommended to use a toner with salicylic as its main ingredient such as the Ko Dermacare Vitality Purifying Essence.

3. Vitamin C serum

When incorporated into your daily skincare lineup, vitamin C can do wonders for your skin. It’ll reduce the appearance of brown spots, boost healthy collagen production, reduce inflammation and irritation, fade acne scars, improve skin’s natural healing processes, and boost your skin’s defence against UV light.

After toning, apply a few drops of vitamin C serum on your face. Choose a serum that is easily absorbed by the skin and leaves a natural refreshing fragrance. One reasonably priced option is the Ko Dermacare C Concentrate Serum

4. Moisturise, even if you have oily skin

Many of those with oily skin skip this step because they do not like the sticky sensation it leaves. That’s the biggest mistake anyone can make. When you don’t moisturise, especially in Malaysia’s hot climate, your skin will dry up and has to produce more oil to make up for the lack of moisture. That means you are making your skin oilier.

There is a moisturiser for every skin type, the trick is to find the right moisturiser for you. A good moisturiser will provide optimum hydration without leaving an oily or sticky sensation. Those with oily skin should opt for an aqua-based moisturiser like the Dermax Bio Hydro Gel 7A or Ko Dermacare Aqua Hydrating Moisturizer I.

5. Broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunblock

To understand the importance of this very last step, you need to first understand how the sun’s UVA and UVB rays damage the skin. UVB is the chief cause of skin reddening and sunburn; it causes skin cancer and photoageing. UVA, which penetrates the skin deeper than UVB, plays a major role in skin ageing and wrinkling. As both rays are very damaging, you’ll need a broad spectrum sunblock that provides both UVA and UVB coverage such as the Ko Dermacare Aqua Gel Sunscreen SPF55.
