Rosacea

The earliest phases of rosacea starts with the gradual reddening of the skin, and the patients may mistakenly self-diagnose themselves as having acne. Rosacea, unlike acne, has no blackheads or whiteheads.

Aside from frequent flushing, rosacea sufferers may experience swelling, itch and even peeling of affected areas. Sun exposure, hot and spicy food or drink can easily aggravate facial flushing. Make-ups, sunscreens or other ointment applied can trigger a burning and stinging sensation. Rosacea can also generates red, sore or gritty eyelid margins, even enlarged nose with prominent pores.

There are several theories regarding the cause of rosacea, including genetic, environmental, vascular and inflammatory factors. Chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation also plays a part.
